Achievement Matters - Spring 2017

Dear Friends of JA New York,

Our busy spring season is in full swing at JA New York. We expect a strong finish of the school year with JA in a Day classroom programs, Job Shadows, High School Heroes, an immersive afterschool program with partner ExpandED, our High School Business Plan Competition presented by the ICE NYSE Foundation, and our interactive Finance Park. “Alternative Spring Break” recently wrapped up, and 50 volunteers from Florida International University, Rollins College, Wartburg College and West Chester University of PA taught JA programs to more than 1,800 students at five schools throughout the city.

This year, we received more than 80 nominations from NYC, Long Island and the Lower Hudson Valley for the generous $10,000 Manuel H. and Claire Barron Student of the Year scholarship award. Applications are currently being reviewed and interviews will be conducted throughout the next month. Keep an eye out for our summer issue of Achievement Matters for the announcement of our 2017 Student of the Year!

We thank you for your continued commitment to our mission to empower young people to own their economic success.

Heroes of New York: Featuring Bill McNamara
Bill McNamara was an NYPD officer before he suffered an injury in the line of duty. But his commitment to giving back never wavered, and he is one of JA New York’s MVP volunteers and a true Hero of New York. Learn more about how Bill inspires kids every day... read Bill’s story.

Tenth Annual Business Plan Competition
We’ve got big plans in the works for our Tenth Annual Business Plan Competition presented by the ICE NYSE Foundation. An exciting update to the program allows students to submit a short video pitch for the online Quarterfinal round. On Monday, May 22, the top teams from that round will present their plans live as Semifinalists at Baruch College. Seven teams, including one Wildcard team, will move on to compete in the Final round of the competition on Thursday, June 1 at KKR & Co. L.P. Headquarters (thanks to Scott Karnas and KKR for hosting us again this year), where they will compete for cash prizes totaling nearly $20,000. This year’s theme is Think Local and we look forward to creative business plan pitches during the final two rounds of competition. Stay tuned for details about the winning teams.

JA New York Partners with Local Youth Organization ExpandED to Deliver Student
“JA Immersion” Programs
Fourteen students from Frederick Douglass Academy II and Wadleigh School of Performing Arts in Manhattan are currently participating in JA New York’s new ExpandED Options program, a four month apprenticeship generously funded by the Pinkerton Foundation.

Our JA Apprentices have completed 55 hours of programming and are more than half way through the program. They have attended JA Finance Park, completed JA Personal Finance and JA Career Success, and participated in JA Job Shadows at U.S. Bank and Microsoft. Participating students have received JA High School Heroes training and are preparing to take on jobs teaching the JA elementary curriculum at summer camps throughout the city.

2017 Lower Hudson Valley Champions Dinner

Lower Hudson Valley Area Flourishes Post-Merger
We are proud to announce that the Lower Hudson Valley region has been growing since JA New York and JA of the Hudson Valley merged last year. In the Lower Hudson Valley area specifically, we anticipate reaching more than 10,000 students this school year – an increase of 50 percent since the pre-merger period.

In April, more than 980 K-8 students at Enrico Fermi School in Yonkers received JA programming from over 60 volunteers, making it the largest program event in the region’s history! We thank Capital One, AT&T, Hudson Barter Exchange, KPMG, Westchester County Probation Department, and Lincoln High School Heroes for teaching these students the skills they need to plan for their academic and economic futures.

On April 26 we held the annual Lower Hudson Valley Champions Dinner honoring Marie Gallagher, SVP and Controller of PepsiCo, and JA New York Board Member. We also honored School 5 of Yonkers with the Middle School Partner of the Year Award, accepted by Principal Dr. Geri Pisacreta. Special thanks to Jim Fosina, Founder and CEO of Fosina Marketing Group and JA New York Board Member, for auctioneering and leading the pledge drive. With the help of all our devoted corporate partners and attendees, the Dinner raised over $115,000 to empower Lower Hudson Valley students to reach their full potential and create their own economic success!

We Love Our Partners!
Junior Achievement of New York is pleased to acknowledge the many corporate and foundation grants and charitable contributions received during the third quarter of the 2016-17 fiscal year ending June 30, 2017. Thanks to the generosity of the partners listed below, JA New York will continue to offer financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work readiness programs through our trained and skilled business and community volunteer mentors, to more than 260 New York City, Long Island and Lower Hudson Valley schools. We thank them for investing in the achievement of tomorrow’s business and community leaders.
